Young cousins memories and tribute to Bob (Robert) Bogle, Lead guitarist for the Ventures

A violet when crushed gives of the sweetest fragrance,

Bob, or known to our family better as Robert, died on June 14,2008.
He and his band has given the world of music much ,in the way of sweet fragrance for our hearts and ears.
Robert was one of my older cousins, so I barely knew him.
Robert came to my Dad's memorial service in '91.
He shared with me that my Dad had taught him how to play his first song on the guitar, he said it was a song called My Wild Irish Rose (if memory serves me correctly).

I think perhaps this is one of the times Robert simply gave sweet fragrance.
It was such a nice thing to say.
It helped me during a very difficult time, funny how little things can mean so much.

My Dad was the wildest of the wild in the family.
So any kind words shared really warmed my heart, but me thinketh Robert "stretched" the teaching of the guitar, just to be sweet.

Dad did like to strum on the guitar for a while, especially after Robert became famous, but I can't recall him ever playing many whole songs, let alone ever teach anyone how to play.

Roberts brother Dennis Bogle, I knew very well. Both of our families camped with them and did a lot of things one summer with them, the fishing was great, even if my Uncle Jess talked me into feeling sorry for a whole string of fish and release them..oh boy was I in trouble.
Uncle Jess did the same thing concerning a bucket of crawdads. There was no "fish" tonight, after a long hard days catch by all the the older cousins (boys)...YIKES, did a couple of us littler kids who were encouraged to liberate the poor things
have to run like crazy the rest of the day...we were really in the doghouse.
I wonder now , if we were ever forgiven ( I thinketh not! )

My Dad,Dennis and Robert each cement masons (my dad a tuck pointer) I believed worked together sometimes on a job.
I was only 9 when Robert co founded the Ventures , and we moved away about that time, so I could be wrong.

Roberts mom Elvie (she was one of the few women preachers back then, the Assembly of God good old fashioned kind of preacher ) , his Dad Bob Sr. (boy could he sing)were good, loving, kind ,generous, people and parents.
I do have vivid memories however of a pair of red chows they had, when visiting them one time.
I always thought the dogs were vicious, but guess what?
I now have a little sweetie 1/2 chow gal .
While Annie can be very opinionated, and very aloof to others, she is very loving (to me and those she knows well).

I do wish I had known Robert better, but it is enough to know ,as part of my family, that he was kind, thoughtful , talented and blessed.
My heart and prayers go out to those closest family members he left behind.
It is hard losing ones loved one.

In researching articles to write this, mostly for my kids (well and you my readers) .
I have cried many tears, not only for the loss of Robert, as part of my family, but for the memories envoked.
Robert looked so much like my Dad.
In some of Robert's videos he has mannerisms that take me back to my childhood.
It has been like seeing my Dad again.
I can't imagine how difficult watching a video of ones actual Dad would be.
While I miss my Dad a lot, I also have grown to realize more, how much I especially miss what could have been.

Our family thought a lot of Robert, and while perhaps distant, our hearts are with those closest to him, during this time especially.

Roberts Music fragrance:
(after I was married, when our kids were pre-teen,I splurged ,when our money was very tight, and purchased one of the Ventures album "TV" specials..I'm sure either Robert or Dennis would have sent me one had I ever wrote and asked, but you know how pride can be , even with family ! :-)

How much duller and sadder the world would be with out ever hearing Hawaii 5-O
(I loved that show, and was Jack Lord ever a hunk)
I truly loved the song ,long before I knew it was one of Roberts.

What about Pipeline, Telstar,Perfidia ? The list goes on...
Here are some links to listen again or perhaps for the first time to some of the Ventures music.

May God comfort each heart who mourns the loss of Bob(Robert to me) Bogle.
and may each come to really know the God whom his family sought to serve.
